WHAT: PE National curriculum (Published 11 September 2013): KS2 Pupils should be taught to take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team. For schools that need some inspirational support then the Outdoor Education Advisers’ Panel (OEAP) ‘Outdoor Learning Cards’ programme and resources are a great starting point.

The first few courses were described by teachers as: 'well-paced and useful activities' - 'trainer was knowledgeable, approachable and engaging' - and the course was 'very enjoyable and informative, with fantastic resources, easy to use back at school'.

The course covers four areas:

 Orienteering – use the site for fun and physical activities, whilst developing good map reading skills.

 Team Building and Problem Solving – present exciting challenges for individuals and teams.

 Bouldering – use of low level climbing walls and holds for physical and mental challenges.

 Journeying – develop skills to undertake ventures around the site and begin to organise local visits.

There are over 50 resource cards, a Handbook and a CD that enables a school to quickly implement an OAA programme. The CD contains suggestions for the progressive development of OAA all aligned to the new curriculum. The Cards’ activities can also be easily adapted to support the wider curriculum, especially Maths, English, Geography and PSHE.

This is the first time that a progressive programme of OAA has ever been developed as part of the curriculum and provides schools with some excellent opportunities to develop OAA both within and beyond their schools grounds.
