London Sport

London sport largeLondon Sport exists to make London the most physically active city in the world.

We are supported by Sport England and the Mayor of London, and work in partnership with London’s Local Authorities and a host of agencies to support less active Londoners to build physical activity habits that support their health, wellbeing and prosperity.

Our strength is working with others and we believe working in partnership with others is the only way we can make real progress in getting Londoners more active.

ACTIVE LIVES

Active Lives Children and Young People Data

Since 2017, following on from the Active Lives Adult Survey, Sport England began gathering data on how Children and Young People engage with sport and physical activity across the country. This is an important part of the jigsaw when looking at future funding streams and government priorities.

Sutton SSP facilitate the collection of Active Lives data from schools across the borough and have for the last three years been one of the leading boroughs in London for the number of surveys completed. Thank you to every school who has taken part, it really does make the data more credible.

SATELLITE CLUB PROJECT - HEALTHY, HAPPY LIVES

London Sport distributes Satellite Clubs funding on behalf of Sport England.

Sutton Schools Sport Partnership has been fortunate to receive some Sport England funding from London Sport to run in partnership with secondary schools and the wider community, 10 projects in Sutton with the aim of raising participation in the least active aged 14+. Each sub-project must last for 30 weeks during the academic year 20/21, 21/22 and must report on a minimum of 20 CYP. Each project should be co-designed by CYP and school staff and can be a mixture of physical activity and more informative activities to improve knowledge around mental health, building confidence and resilience in the young people it targets. Ideally there should be vision of how physical activity can be sustained post project.

What is a Satellite Club?

Satellite clubs are extensions or outposts of community sports clubs which are established in a new venue, usually a secondary school or college and specifically targeted at the 11 to 25 age group. Satellite clubs are run by sports clubs who bring their expertise and enthusiasm to a place where young people already meet. Coaches and volunteers from or linked to the community hub club work in partnership with the satellite host venue to create a new satellite club. Of course, these can also be run by existing teachers who may receive training or already have expertise in a particular activity and are able to signpost young people to external clubs to continue participation outside of school.

Why do we need this project in Sutton?

As young people get older their relationship with physical activity changes, they start to become busier with schoolwork and other interests, and there are often barriers to taking part, such as not being able to afford certain activities or not being able to travel to a venue. Also, personal barriers such as ‘I’m not very good at it’ or ‘I don’t want to go on my own’. The step from school or college sport to a community club is often too great for young people. This is why so many 11-25 year olds in particular drop-out of sport. Satellite clubs make it easier for young people to stay in sport, or to start playing sport for the first time. Also, we know that only 46% of CYP aged 5 -16 in Sutton are physically active for the recommended 60 mins per day (Active Lives Survey data 2019-20) which is roughly the same as the National average. 46% are active for the recommended 30 mins per day at school and 60 % are active for the recommended 30 mins per day outside of school (both higher than the National average). There is a drop off from Yr 9 onwards, particularly in girls. Results from the Healthwatch Survey in 2019 of 5140 secondary students in Sutton reveal that wellbeing scores are significantly lower in girls than boys, they decline as age goes up, and the less sleep you get the lower the scores.

The funded clubs provide new opportunities for young people to get active and give them the chance to regularly take part in sport and physical activity in a convenient and enjoyable environment.

In preparation for this project nearly 2000 surveys were collected from Year 8 in summer 2020 to find out how active they were, what sorts of activities they might like to do and what, if any were the barriers to participation alongside some Youth Personality questions.

Whilst this gave us some valuable insight, the project has been very delayed due to COVID. We are hopeful that more clubs will begin in September when we return to a more 'normal' existence.
