Water Safety
This workshop centres around the child understanding that water is fun but is a ‘life threat’ too and that they are responsible for their own actions/safety in and around water plus they can educate others also in the process. We use RLS resources to deliver this message as this is up to date and relevant information.
Our water safety package starts with an assembly for multiple year groups (either whole school or key stage) followed by one year group taking part in more details workshops in their classroom. Many schools choose Yr 6 as they are about to venture out unsupervised in their next stage of life.
The assemblies are age appropriate and involve an introduction to the RSL and knowing what the beach flags are.
The workshops have a combination of theory and practical with the underlying message of keeping safe in and around water. We begin and reiterate throughout what the Water safety Code is and why it is important. Practical activities involve understanding what a hazard is and spotting them in the cartoon scenarios. For the older children we explore the dangers of of iced water in winter and what cold water shock is. We teach the children the ‘float to live technique.’
